Hypnosis for Pain Management in Portland, Oregon

The deep state of mental, emotional and physical relaxation known as the state of hypnosis produces physiological changes in the body and in the brain. In a state of hypnosis, blood vessels loosen, the blood is able to flow more fluidly and effortlessly throughout the entire system, distributing vital oxygen to the brain and enabling a better distribution of essential nutrients to our vital organs. Stress levels decrease significantly. Cortisol levels decrease (steroid hormone produced by the adrenal gland and released in the body under stress, responsible for fatigue, reduced immune system efficiency and increased sensitivity to pain).

FMRI (Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging) studies of the brain before, during and after hypnosis demonstrate decreased cortex and prefrontal cortex activity (the areas of the brain responsible for planning and decision making) and increased activity in the visual cortex (responsible for proecessing visual stimuli) and amygdala (almond-shaped aread of the temporal lobe responsible for the processing and expression of emotions).

In a state of hypnosis, the body is finally given the chance to return doing what it was engineered to do: heal and restore itself.

Understanding Dissociation

Dissociation is the normal response of our central nervous system when we are faced with intense physical harm, fear or terror we are unable to avoid, escape or shield ourselves from. In a state of dissociation, we undergo a partial or complete disruption of the normal integration of our conscious and psychological functioning. We can no longer feel physical pain, shed tears, access or express emotions, communicate or interact with others. We become disconnected from our physical bodies and emotions.

The dissociative state demonstrates the possibility of the brain to distance itself from the experience of pain.

History of Hypnotic Analgesia

The use of hypnosis for pain control dates back to 1845 when Dr. James Esdaile successfully began performing surgical procedures using hypnosis as anaesthesia, rendering his patients analgesic and rapidly gaining worldwide reputation for his painless surgeries.

Born in Scotland in 1808, James Esdaile studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, graduating as an M.D. in 1830. He was first appointed as assistant surgeon to the East India Company in Calcutta, Bengal, then the capital of British India. Upon witnessing the level of pain suffered by some of his patients during surgical procedures, Dr. Esdaile decided to try mesmeric analgesia and succeeded in rendering his patients analgesic.

Dr. Esdaile’s mesmeric anaesthesia was known to be extremely safe. He is considered by many to have been the pioneer in the use of hypnosis for surgical anaesthesia.

The Power of Hypnosis

Comparative scientific studies published by leading universities nationwide demonstrate hypnosis is the most effective method to stop smoking.

According to the largest ever scientific comparison of the various methods available to quit smoking, a meta-analysis statistically combining results of more than 600 studies of 72,000 people from America and Europe, hypnosis is over three times as effective as nicotine replacement options and 15 times more powerful than attempting to quit alone. University of Iowa, Journal of Applied Psychology, How One in Five Give Up Smoking. October 1992. New Scientist, October 10, 1992.

Studies also show that after a two-year follow up, patients who quit smoking with hypnosis were twice as likely to remain smoke-free than those who quit on their own. Wynd, CA. Journal of Nursing Scholarship, 2005; 37:3, pages 245-250.

Role of the Subconscious Mind

The subconscious mind has a powerful control over every part of our lives, from the functioning of our very organs, heart, liver, lungs, breathing ability, etc. to the storage and management of all our memories, experiences, learning and functioning capacities. Very often, events, situations, words, traumas, memories we might not even consciously remember play an important role in the deeply engrained habits, behaviors and actions of our day-to-day lives.

Hypnosis enables us to go back to the cause responsible for our unwanted behaviors and examine the initial sensitizing event with an open, objective and adult mind. This allows us to bring clarity and understanding to the actual root of the problem. The root cause of a smoking habit has little to do with tobacco itself, but is more often linked to deeply engrained issues such as low self-worth, perceptions or beliefs buried deep within the subconscious mind. By going back to the cause, not only do we uncover that this coping mechanism is no longer needed, we realize it has in fact been hindering our health, well being and happiness. Once this comprehension is achieved and integrated, everything unfolds in an easier, more effortless manner. Once the cause is resolved, the problem behavior gradually dissolves.

Emergency Response

Emergency Response - A man wearing a helmet - First responder

Emergency Response Training

Tailored to first responders, law enforcement officials, EMTs, paramedics and firefighters, our Emergency Response and Pain Control Hypnosis training teaches valuable techniques to help avoid shock in trauma cases and accident victims.

Specifically designed for emergency situations, these techniques enable us to distract and bypass the barriers of the conscious mind to deliver efficient suggestions, help avoid shock, block pain, decrease bleeding, boost the immune system, reduce the severity of injuries in burn victims and provide vital assistance to those in critical situations.

The nature of emergency in itself presents a unique combination of factors enabling the efficiency of a hypnotherapeutic approach.

The Anatomy of Emergency

One of the keys of successful hypnosis lies in the ability of the subject to concentrate. The victim of an injury is concentrating intensely. By so doing, they have already bypassed the analytical part of the mind, enabling direct access to the subconscious level of the mind. A person in a state of emergency has a heightened need and desire for help, along with a willingness to trust and believe in the possibility of receiving such help.

The ingredients for successful hypnosis, which in a typical, non-threatening situation, would take preparation and coaching to achieve, are gathered. Studies reveal direct hypnotic suggestions enable injured children to reduce the severity of bleeding. Substantial decreases in the severity of the burns in burn victims are also recorded when hypnotic suggestions are delivered within the first hour.

Hypnosis for Weight Loss

Hypnosis for Weight Loss - A woman wearing a blue dress - Forskolin

Contrary to popular beliefs, the wide-spread battle for weight loss has less to do with food and more to do with the way your mind is programmed. In the US, food is available to all of us. Yet, some people face lifelong struggles with excess weight and obesity while others remain slim and fit throughout their lives. The reason for these differences in motivation, fitness, energy and life choices is rooted in the way your brain is programmed to respond and react.  It has little to do with genes or hereditary makeup. It is simply learned and rehearsed programmed behavior. The brain controls every part of our lives, from vital functions such as breathing to our capacity to comprehend the world around us, process and memorize events, and react accordingly. When we change the programming of our mind, we change the way we act, react and experience life.

Role of the Subconscious Mind

The subconscious mind controls every part of our lives, from the functioning of our organs to the processing and storage of our experiences, memories, learning and functioning capacities. Very often, events and situations we might not even consciously remember play an important role in our deeply engrained habits, behaviors and actions.

A child, for instance, who witnesses the illness of beloved family member, may notice how thin the person is and could very well, without consciously realizing it, establish a subconscious association between weight loss and illness, potentially death. Once this association is imprinted in the mind, it becomes a lifelong and deeply rooted protective mechanism. Later on in adult life, no matter the attempts, will power of methods employed, if the subconscious mind is convinced weight loss leads to illness, it will kick in and resist every attempt to lose weight in order to preserve and protect health.

Hypnosis enables us to go back to the cause and examine the initial sensitizing event with an open, objective and adult mind. This allows us to bring clarity and understanding to the actual cause of the problem. The cause is never food or the specific behaviors in themselves, but deeply anchored emotional issues such as low self-worth, misperceptions or negative beliefs buried within the subconscious mind. By going back to the cause, we understand these protective mechanisms are no longer needed and have in fact been hindering our health, well being and happiness. Once this understanding is integrated, we are finally able to achieve our goals easily and effortlessly. When the cause is dissolved, the problem disappears.

Success Stories

Elijah, Portland, Oregon, March 2011

Thank you Genvièv. Before coming to see you, I had been struggling with weight issues my entire life. With every diet, I went through excruciating cravings. The caffeine and sugar withdrawals I experienced each time I tried to quit my addiction to sodas were unbearable. Every failed attempt discouraged me further.

When you explained trying to fix self-sabotaging behaviors without finding and treating their cause was the reason for the unsuccessful outcomes, I wondered how we would find the cause of this lifelong problem. I wasn’t aware of it.

I had never been hypnotized before, yet, the moment you brought me back to origin of the problem and I found myself a little boy again, waiting for the ice-cream truck in front of my parents’ home, the scene was so vivid, it was like being there all over again. I was barefoot in the grass and I could actually see how tall the grass was. When the ice-cream truck arrived, I could see every sticker on the truck, the face of the man driving it, the shirt he had on, with startling clarity. I had no idea I still remembered that man who played such an insignificant role in my life in the grand scheme of things. When we followed me back to my childhood home, everything was there in vivid and colorful details.

Finally being given the chance to understand the profound reason behind my lifelong self-sabotaging habits was incredible. After one session, I truly feel more in control of my destiny. In the week since, I have not had a single soda and did not experience any of the cravings and withdrawals I always had in the past! The shift was easy and natural. I changed my eating habits as well, choosing healthy, nutritional foods instead of the unhealthy choices I made before.

I cannot believe I didn’t try hypnosis years ago! It is a very awakening experience, truly something I had never experienced before.

Florence, London, England, July 2010

I listened to your session only once and it is funny, at times, as I am walking through the streets of London, I can hear your voice, vibrating in my imagination and filling me with confidence. What an incredible gift! I didn’t fall back in the negative patterns I had been struggling with since my childhood. Sometimes, when I’m tired and stressed, I feel the glimpse of an old negative habit, as a far away memory trying to attract me from a distance, but I drink a tall glass of water and the temptation is gone.

Chip, Ashland, Oregon, June 2010

Genvièv, wow… you have a true gift! What an incredible experience your session was. I felt “elsewhere” as I was listening to your voice, and when you took me back to the root of the problem in my childhood, I saw the little boy I was then. By the end of the session, I felt liberated, full of energy and joy. The results were instantaneous.

Experience Hypnotic Relaxation

Functional MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) studies of the brain before, during and after hypnosis demonstrate the physiological changes naturally occuring in the body during hypnosis. The hypnotic state is characterized by profound physical and mental relaxation. As the musles, tissues, cells, nerves relax, blood vessels loosen.

Unobstructed, our blood is able to flow fluidly and effortlessly through our entire body, carrying vital oxygen and essential nutrients to our brain and vital organs. We experience a boost of physical rejuvenation and our body is able to return doing what it was programmed to do: heal itself.

Discover the deep level of mind, body and soul relaxation characteristic of the state of hypnosis. Learn how to anchor and replicate this serene state of well being in your day-to-day life, whenever and wherever you need.

Reprogram your Brain

Psychologists and psychiatrists point out that when thoughts are conveyed to the subconscious mind, impressions are made onto brain cells. It is the law of cause and effect. The subconscious mind faithfully reproduces the ideas impressed upon it. The habitual thinking of the conscious mind establishes deep grooves in the subconscious mind.

The hypnotic state enables us to bypass the barriers of the conscious mind and access the subconscious level of the mind. This process allows us to bring to light the seeds responsible for our current, negative emotional and behavioral states, change the imprints left behind, and reprogram our brain with positive, healthy and beneficial truths, beliefs and images.

If you have conveyed negative concepts to your subconscious mind, the most powerful method for overcoming them is to replace them with constructive, healthy, harmonious thoughts. Frequently replayed onto the subconscious mind, they will form new, healthy habits of thoughts and life.

Conquer Obstacles, Blocks, Fears, Procrastination

Uncover the hidden obstacles standing between you and your goals and release them in a gentle and effective manner.

There is a reason, a cause, a motivator behind each of our problems, blocks and limitations. Hypnosis enables us to identify the source of the unwanted pattern and resolve it.  Dissolving the causes responsible for our performance blocks allows us to find our way back to effortless success.

“I came to Genvièv to address a fear of failure (or success) causing compulsive procrastination.  The results were miraculous.  We identified a formative event in my early childhood and addressing it has been phenomenal. I completed nearly two months of procrastinated actions within the first week after the session, and after the next two I have brought my entire personal, financial and business lives back under control!” Jason – Portland, Oregon – January 2012.

Recharge your energy, enhance your performance, give wings to your natural potential and expand your skills by learning to work with the subconscious level of your mind.

Address Sadness & Stress

While prescription medications can, in some cases, offer a degree of relief from symptoms of depression or anxiety, in other cases, they fail to address the specific cause responsible for these conditions, thereby missing the target for lasting remission from emotional distress.

Antidepressants are also linked to long list of side-effects including nausea, dry mouth, dizziness, increased sweating, constipation, fatigue, appetite and weight changes, insomnia, abnormal dreams, irritability, blurred vision, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), vertigo, decreased sex drive and sexual problems. Some of them report occasionally compounding depression and leading to suicidal thoughts or behaviors, anxiety, agitation, panick attacks, hostility, aggressiveness, restlessness and unusual changes in behavior, including engaging in dangerous activities. Rare side-effects also include mental changes, confusion, hallucinations, changes in blood pressure and heart rate, cardiac arrhythmia, fever, shivering, shakiness, agitation, seizures and coma.

Our emotions are there for a reason. They act as a flag, a signal, letting us know there is something below the surface that needs to be understood, addressed and resolved. Hypnotherapy enables us to track negative emotions back to their root cause, their source, the reason why they became a part of our experience of life. Being able to bring to light the underlying causes responsible for depression or anxiety enables us to understand why we feel the way we do. By dissolving misperceptions and restoring our truth, we have the possibility to heal the wounds of our past and finally regain our wellness, balance and peace of mind.

Please note a physician’s written authorization is required prior to initiating work on diagnosed conditions. If you are currently taking prescription medications for depression or anxiety, do not stop or reduce your doseage without your doctor’s approval. As clinical hypnotherapists, we work in close cooperation with your medical team. Your continued progress is monitored by your doctor. This enables us to provide you with optimal results.

Redefine Yourself!

Redefine Yourself! - A person standing in front of a mirror posing for the camera - Joseph Bennette

Tonight, our beautiful and inspiring fitness instructor Abby started the class by asking us a simple question: “Are you ready to redefine yourself?”

And in this one sentence, she summarized the spirit of the work we do all day, every day, building Athletes of the Mind©. Learning how to pick up the pieces after adversity obliterates us and everything we thought defined us, rise from our very ashes and rebuild ourselves stronger, better, more efficient, more resilient than before.

The correlations between the foundations of my teachings and advanced athletic training are not coincidental. My lifelong athletic training has shaped my path and serves as the backbone of my philosophy and approach. For decades, I have been teaching people from all walks of life how to use the power of their minds to transform their existences, survive and thrive, soar over obstacles and join the few, the proud, the Adversity Athletes©.

Becoming an Athlete

Learning to become an athlete of the mind follows the same principles as those of physical athletic training. It requires methodology, scientific knowledge and understanding of the process, desire, drive, discipline and repetition. Once you get started, your 3Ds take care of themselves: desire, drive and discipline begin snowballing the moment you get moving. It is the very principle of Newton’s law of motion: an object in motion tends to stay in motion.

Understanding Adversity

Some of us are hit by unspeakable adversity. The kind that leaves you shattered, fractured, face down in the dirt, robbed of your strength, stunned, speechless, betrayed and defeated.

What do you have left?

Everything

Your mind controls everything. Control your mind, control everything.

Together, we can rebuild you. We can make you stronger, faster, more resilient, more efficient than before. We can ignite within you a force, a drive, a passion for living you never even knew existed.

There is Only One Question

Are you ready to show them what you’ve got? More directly, are you ready to discover how strong you truly are?

Get to Know Your Brain

Get to Know Your Brain - A close up of a watch - Medical imaging

Interestingly, the part of our body that defines who we are and allows us to understand, process and react to the world around us – our brain – is the part we seem to know and understand the least. In our Get to Know your Brain series, we shed light on the control center of your being, the part that makes you you.  When you know how your brain works, you can change the way you feel, think, act and react.

Did you know: the brain is made up of about 75% water, uses 20% of the total oxygen and 20% of the blood circulating in our body. Hence, the better we hydrate, the deeper we breathe, the more relaxed we are, the better our blood flows through our body and the more efficiently our brain functions.

Researchers from the universities of East London and Westminster found that students who drink water during exams obtain higher grades, performing 10% better than those who don’t – the difference of a full grade. Visual attention and memory are also proven to increase with better hydration. This is due to the enhanced performance of the brain when properly hydrated and the fact drinking water is shown to alleviate anxiety, which is known to negatively affect performance.

With clinical hypnosis, we learn how to change our brain wave cycles to enhance our mental capacities. This partly explains the rejuvenating and restorative boost experienced during and after hypnosis. It also accounts for the superior clarity of mind and mental focus experienced during hypnosis, which enables us to recover or retain considerable amounts of information, very often out of reach when we function in the conscious level of the mind.

Conquering Fears

I just had another fascinating demonstration of the permanent and radical effect of hypnosis to eradicate lifelong uncontrollable and debilitating behaviors.

All my life, I have had an acute phobia of needles, blood tests being the worst of it. You can control your fears, to some degree, grabbing all of your courage and facing them, repeatedly, until they no longer have an effect on you. Phobias are another matter altogether. Phobias typically place you in an uncontrollable life-or-death state of panic. You either freeze, fight or flee, and occasionally (if you are like me) all of the above. When you are combat trained, with a decade of martial arts and self-defense training under your belt, let me tell you, it’s not a pretty picture to find yourself fighting what you perceive as mortal combat in a hospital lab. I cannot tell you the number of times I have left a state of absolute chaos behind. By far, some of the most embarrassing snapshots of my journey.

Hypnosis for Irrational Fears

While I have used self-hypnosis, hypnosis and clinical hypnotherapy all my life to propel me in everything I do, I admit I had not yet taken the time to address the acute phobia of needles that has defined me always. After all, that is definitely not something I have to face every day. Quite the opposite, I’ve gone to great lengths to avoid facing it. Last year, for instance, during my annual medical visit, the doctor ordered a complete panel of blood work to get a general overview of my health. “Just take the elevators to the 2nd floor,” she indicated. “I’m sending over the lab request, they’ll be waiting for you upstairs.” I nodded, exited her room, went straight to my car and left. I didn’t even look at the elevators. A few hours later, I received a phone call from the doctor’s office asking where I was, indicating the lab was still waiting for me to come out of the elevator. I didn’t return the call. They followed up a week later. I still didn’t return the call. That was me with blood tests until last week. Not that I never had them, of course, with my lifestyle of extreme stunts of all sorts, I’ve been in and out of ER and on IV more often than I wish to remember, but it always took extreme measures to get me perforated. I’m talking about 10 hospital staff members wrestling me to the ground, shoving an oxygen mask on my face and struggling to restrain my kicks and punches kind of measures. The type that leaves everyone involved permanently traumatized.

Understanding the Root Cause

After a lifetime suffering through this, I finally had enough. I called on a colleague and made an appointment.

Phobias, like trauma and other deeply anchored, lifelong patterns, require regression to cause hypnosis. Self-hypnosis, suggestion hypnosis, NLP or other types of light conversational work are never going to permanently resolve lifelong automatic negative behaviors like phobias, depression, anxiety, addictions, whether to food, tobacco or other substances. Unless you address the actual cause of these problems, anything you do will act as a temporary bandage, possibly distracting you for some time. As long as the cause remains active, it lies under the surface and will prompt the negative behavior to return sooner or later.

Anytime we deal with lifelong negative behaviors, anchored early in life in the subconscious mind, they need to be regressed to their source or root cause, addressed and resolved in order to obtain lasting change. This is something those of us who are experienced and specialized in regression to cause with clinical hypnotherapy excel at. And this is not something that can easily be self-applied. We need to pair up and allow another to work on us, in order to be more fully receptive in the process.

Hypnosis Experiments with Fears

My colleague and I did an interesting experiment with this. In the first session, we decided not to resolve the cause and instead, experimented with switching my brain’s reaction to needles, pasting an imprint of the most exquisite experience I could remember over the phobic reaction. I made an appointment with an acupuncturist, and as I lay on his table, I allowed him to insert 2 long acupuncture needles into my body. There was progress, indeed. However, it was an exercise in will power and the nervous tension was still present, even if noticeably reduced.

I made a second appointment with my colleague and asked him to regress the phobia to its cause. This time, after igniting and exacerbating my visceral panic for needles, as we do in our process of regressing to cause, we sent my mind back to the initial sensitizing event (ISE). The ISE is the root cause for the negative behavior targeted. Amazingly, I found myself in the womb, before being born, witnessing the unforgettable trauma of losing my twin brother. The event forever engraved itself in my consciousness in the form of what I perceived as a “spiral of death.” A notion which, until recently, had been difficult for me to fully comprehend or explain. Losing the one who was my other half to this lethal spiral that took him away, left me behind in the darkness, alone, afraid, abandoned and devastated. Talk about an imprint.

In Utero Imprints

A baby in the womb is acutely aware of what is happening around them. They feel the emotions of their mothers so intensely, they identify with them as if they were their own. When the begining of a miscarriage was suspected, my mother was placed on bed rest and began receving multiple shots and blood tests to monitor and stabilize her condition. From within, the trauma I experienced was solely focused on the devastating loss of my twin brother in what I perceived as an irreversible spiral of death that tore him away from me.

While the memories become burried as you are born and continue on with your journey, the trauma remains active in the subconscious level of the mind. This is not something that can be soothed by someone’s words ensuring you that from now on, whenever you think about needles, you’ll feel wonderful. With trauma, as with anything anchored early and deeply, the only way out is through.

Parts Negotiation Hypnosis

Once we had regressed the phobia to its root cause, we added parts negotiation to the equation. We asked my subconscious mind the reason why it responded so violently to anyone who approached me with needles. Parts dialogue at this level of the mind enables us to receive genuine responses from the parts of the mind responsible for the behavior. “To protect her from death” is the answer we received. That’s when the negotiations need to take place.

Parts negotiations require psychological understanding, patience and compassion. We explained to this part of my mind that while its goal was valuable and honorable, it had actually become counter-productive. We pointed out that in my life of today, I had become a smart, independent, adult woman, very capable of making the right choices for my safety, health and well being. And while preserving me from death was a valid goal, the needles I chose to accept no longer represented a death threat. Quite the opposite. Today, they were actually a way for me to preserve my health and well being, enabling me to receive the medical check ups necessary to maintain optimal health.

I’m a perfectionist and I like to leave no stone unturned when I work with regression to cause. I asked my colleague to give a new role and function to the part of my mind that had been working so diligently my entire life to protect my safety by fighting to the death against needle threats. You can’t easily remove a part’s sole purpose without first reaching a clear, mutual understanding and second, giving the part a new role to perform. Since the goal of this part was to ensure my survival, we asked if it would be willing to continue in its function to preverve my health, by focusing instead on ensuring I received proper rest and nutrition and remained aware of potentially endangering situations. The part agreed. We had a deal. We emerged me.

Releasing Irrational Fears with Hypnosis

Last week, I returned to my doctor’s office for a check up. Tactfully, she didn’t mention the fact I pulled an MIA (Missing In Action) for last year’s lab work.  Again, she ordered a complete blood panel to be drawn on the second floor. I didn’t say a word. No matter the number of miraculous transformations I continue to witness, day after day, in the course of my work, I still look at each and every one of them as independent miracles and never take them for granted or guaranteed. A life spent fighting needles to the death is not something you easily forget.

I left the doctor’s office and went to my car. After storing my notebooks, I locked the car and walked back toward the medical center. Once in the hallway, I took the elevator to the 2nd floor and made my way to the reception lobby. The entire time, I was wondering where and when I would turn around and leave. There was a wait at the reception desk. When the attendant finally waved me toward her, I indicated I was here for blood work. She checked me in and asked me to have a seat in the waiting room. I was still there fifteen minutes later when a nurse called my name.

Last time I was at ER, which was earlier this year, a male nurse approached me to take my blood. All I could say was: “I have bad news for you…” He understood right away. This time, looking at the nurse in front of me, I tried to be more subtle: “You should know, I have a severe, uncontrollable phobia of needles. I tend to kick and punch. It typically doesn’t go over very well.” She looked at me with a concerned look. “I promise I’ll try to cooperate as best as I can,” I added. “This is not something I control too well.”

I took my iPod, turned the music on, laid down on the table and extended my arm. This alone was a miracle in itself. My arm usually curls up in an iron-clad fold that no one and nothing can unfold. More often than not, they end up taking blood from the back of my hand. As I laid there listening to my music, the nurse took two vials of blood and gently tapped me on the shoulder to let me know it was finished. I looked at her startled. “You did very well!” she said with a smile of relief. I walked out of the medical building, stunned. Little did she know the extent of the traumatic chaos she had just avoided.

Working in Cooperation with the Medical Field

As clinical hypnotherapists, we do not independently work with medical conditions, diagnose, treat or prescribe. We do not practice psychotherapy. We teach and train our clients to shift limiting beliefs, reach their goals and enhance their well being using hypnotic techniques. We only address diagnosed physical, mental and emotional symptoms with the authorization and collaboration of medical doctors, psychiatrists, psychologists, nurse practitioners and social workers.

We require a physician’s authorization before initiating work to support your medical team with your overall wellness and work only under your physician’s guidance. Working in close cooperation with your medical team enables us to ensure your progress in an optimal manner.

Maximizing Brain Health

Pain Management - A man and a woman in a white shirt - Medicine

Keeping our brain healthy plays a critical part in every aspect of our life. It affects our ability to think, plan, feel, remember, work, play and has a profound impact on the quality of our sleep itself. Scientific studies show we can control the health of our brain and that doing so considerably decreases our risk for mental health problems, including Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

Physical and Mental Activity

Our brain contains around 100 billion neurons. Each linking to others in a network encompassing trillions of connections. This makes the human brain the most complicated entity in the universe. Like the rest of our body, our brain, if neglected, will gradually lose agility, flexibility and begin deteriorating. In order to remain sharp and well functioning, both the body and the brain need regular exercise. Physical activity ensures better blood flow to our vital organs, including the brain. It encourages the production of new brain cells, lowers stress and reduces the risk of heart attack, stroke and diabetes. Mentally stimulating activities, such as studying, learning new skills or languages, playing an instrument and other forms of intellectual stimulation also strengthen brain cells, reinforcing the electrical activity between existing cells and prompting the production of new cells. The repetition of learned tasks is what enables specific neural connections to become active and operational. In other words, the more we continue learning, the smarter we continue being.

Cigarettes, Drugs & Alcohol

The casual use of cigarettes, drugs and alcohol in itself has physical implications that severely damage every single organ in the body. We all know smoking causes permanent lung damage and drinking irreversible liver damage. What is less understood is that regular alcohol and drug use prompts irreversible brain damage. The chronic and potentially life-threatening deterioration of the brain and body due to alcohol and drug intake can start with symptoms as simple as changes in sleep patterns, loss of quality or quantity of sleep, shortened attention span or decrease in coordination. Symptoms can gradually worsen and lead to severe cognitive disruptions and serious mental health conditions. Chemical substances alter the chemistry of the brain responsible for coordinating our motor skills, motivation and emotions. Prolonged use causes permanent damage to the areas of the brain responsible for our psychological and emotional well being.

Nutrition

Nutrition plays an essential part in the health of our brain. A healthy diet rich in dark vegetables, fruits and antioxidants enhances the functioning the brain. High intake of saturated fat and cholesterol is known to clog arteries and contribute to stroke and brain cell damage. Studies show people who are overweight are twice as likely to develop dementia later in life. Those suffering from high cholesterol and high blood pressure are six times more likely to experience brain function degeneration.

Maximizing Brain Health

To sum up, a healthy nutrition combined with physical and mental activity, social interaction and overall fitness is the best way to keep our brain healthy and our neurons sharp.

K9 Hypnosis

K9 Hypnosis - A dog wearing a costume - Schnoodle

I had the opportunity, some time ago, to demonstrate a rapid induction on a canine subject in a state of acute panic. The demonstration was so compelling and effective, the vet handling the animal stared at me stunned and offered me a job on the spot.

It was a quick, radical induction. In less than three seconds, the subject went from an uncontrolled state of panic, with two people struggling to restrain him, to a complete state of somnambulism, where he remained for fifteen minutes solid, until I brought him out. This enabled both the medical team to proceed with their intervention quickly and effortlessly, and the canine subject to receive medical attention peacefully and painlessly.

While he was checked, probed and administered shots, his tissues did not flinch or react in any way, confirming he was in a state of complete hypnotic anesthesia.

Two things enabled me to do this. The first one is my lifelong experience training and interacting with animals and wildlife, which makes it easy for me to establish rapid rapport. The second one, obviously has to do with my professional practice of hypnotherapy. When you work in clinical hypnotherapy, you go in and out of hypnosis all day long, as you teach others how to access the subconscious level of the mind. The more you journey back and forth between the conscious and subconscious levels of the mind, the shorter the bridge between them becomes. This means professional hypnotherapists enter deep levels of hypnotic trance in the blink of an eye, anytime and anywhere they need to.

In this case, all I had to do was place both of my hands around the dog’s cranium. Positioning my thumbs between his eyes, I moved in close, stared deep into his eyes, and applying gentle pressure with my thumbs, I dived into a deep level of hypnotic trance. Holding his gaze, I brought him to depth with me instantly and without a single word.

As a Wilderness Emergency Medicine First Responder, I am trained to respond to critical, life-threatening situations with authority, calm and confidence in my training, knowledge, skills and experience. Similar principles apply to Emergency Hypnosis. Subjects in a state of shock, fear, panic and pain are experiencing heightened emotions and already have intense focus and concentration: the prerequisites enabling access to the subconscious level of the mind. They are acutely receptive and desperately seeking guidance. The state of fear in itself creates a strong desire for help. Stepping forward in these cases, with calm, controlled, stable and confident leadership skills, positions you as the rescuer the subject in fear is hoping for. All you have to do is calmly escort them to safety.

Once the medical procedure was completed, the vet turned toward me startled: “How did you do this?” she asked. “I saw you applying pressure to a specific part of the dog’s head. Was it how you were able to immobilize him?”

“I used a pressure point, between the eyes,” I responded, “applying gentle but firm pressure.” I had to clarify: “I’m a clinical hypnotherapist. I do this for a living.””I used a pressure point, between the eyes,” I responded, “applying gentle but firm pressure.” I had to clarify: “I’m a clinical hypnotherapist. I do this for a living.”

“Do you need a job?” she asked. “Can we hire you?”

I looked at the doctor and smiled, thinking: “Boy, would I be in trouble if I placed a closed sign on my door and left my clients.”
